SUSPENSION:REAR:SHOCK ABSORBER

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2024 Tacoma Hybrid and 2024-2025 Tacoma vehicles. The metal flange on the front and rear shock absorbers may corrode and fail, resulting in detachment of the external oil reservoir.

POWER TRAIN

I am reporting an intermittent and potentially safety-related drivability/powertrain issue with my 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter i-FORCE MAX. The vehicle has experienced previous intermittent abnormal drivetrain/transmission behavior while towing, particularly while towing in rain. During previous occurrences, the drivetrain/transmission felt as though it was slipping or behaving abnormally. These concerns were previously reported to Toyota dealers, but the condition could not be duplicated and no definitive cause was identified. The most recent and most serious occurrence happened while towing a travel trailer up a steep grade in heavy rain. The vehicle was operating in 2WD with Tow/Haul mode and S/manual shifting engaged. The vehicle was under significant engine/drivetrain load, operating at approximately 3,500-4,000 RPM and approximately 3rd/4th gear. Before the warning messages appeared, I noticed abnormal drivetrain behavior and RPM fluttering/hunting, similar to the previous intermittent transmission/drivetrain problems. The vehicle then experienced a complete loss of accelerator response. The engine remained running, but accelerator input became essentially unresponsive. Pressing the accelerator did not cause the engine RPM to increase. After removing my foot from the accelerator, the engine continued running at approximately idle. The following warning messages appeared: * “Call Your Dealer” * “System Malfunction” * “Drive Start Control Malfunction”

STRUCTURE

Driver side doors won’t open. Truck locks you in. It has 25k miles on it and Toyota dealer says they can’t get the parts to make my truck safe.

SUSPENSION

While the vehicle was parked in my driveway, I noticed oil leaking on the ground and discovered that the rear shock absorber had suffered a catastrophic structural failure. The vehicle is a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road covered under the manufacturer's original factory warranty. This specific vehicle configuration is included under active federal safety recall campaign 26TB14 / 26TA14 (NHTSA Campaign Number 26V514) for rear suspension failure. Upon taking the vehicle to an authorized dealership, it was determined that the vehicle is completely unsafe to operate and entirely undriveable due to the severity of this rear suspension component failure. The manufacturer has officially opened a corporate case file but has logged a nationwide parts backlog, stating that the required replacement safety components are completely unavailable due to supply chain restrictions. As a result, the manufacturer is unable to remedy this critical safety defect for up to six months, leaving an active, under-warranty recall vehicle grounded and severely incapacitated on a dealership lot indefinitely due to a known factory manufacturing defect

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I am looking to purchase a used Toyota Tacoma and was interested in this vehicle. As I studied the CARFAX report I noticed it had been sold twice with active recalls and never repaired. Right Toyota sold the vehicle as "Certified" and never fixed the first recall and eventually Chapman sold the vehicle with a second recall that was never fixed although they aren't selling the vehicle as certified.

VISIBILITY

On my 24 Tacoma TRD Sport early in July my wife went to run the A/C and it was just blowing air. I took it to the local Toyota dealer on July 27, and they told me that a small pin hole leaked all of the freon out. Something like a rock or road debris. As they gave me the estimate to repair, excess of $3,000 I argued back that I had no idea what happened until my wife went to run the A/C. The dealer responded to file an "accident report" with insurance as the best course of action. I had full warranty coverage for 10 years, 100,000 miles and my truck had 25,000 miles on it. So, I called my insurance company to make up a date and time of when "something" hit the truck to develop this pin hole leak. Bottom line, this A/C condenser lies vulnerable to getting hit along with other critical components on the large openings on this model truck. The other fact is how quickly this A/C condenser failed from road debris is concerning regarding quality of parts being installed on new vehicles. I will include pictures downloaded. This truck came with a felt, fabric type front "skid" plate that I replaced with steel skid plate. And after this "incident" I installed chicken wire cut-outs over the 4 lower openings where the "debris" came in at speed and planning a mesh style grill protector to fill in the other lower openings. The question is, why do I have to go out of my way and expense to protect critical components from road debris that are a hazard today? And why should I have to pay so much for literally defective parts that failed so easily? I have not repaired the condenser because I have to save up to pay for it all. So, when the weather is warmer, my truck sits when it should be driven to baseball games and other activities including work. This has hampered my experience with this newer truck and my relationship with the dealer and corporate Toyota (which I called) to fully understand why they would both not lift a finger to assist.

PARKING BRAKE,SERVICE BRAKES

The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle jumped a curb, went down a riverbank, and crashed into a telephone pole. The air bags did not deploy. The brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The parking brake was engaged, and the vehicle stopped. The message “Parking Brake Malfunction - See Dealer” was displayed. There was no injury sustained. A Police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, and the contact was informed that there was abnormal brake wear. The dealer determined that the pistons had detached. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where an unknown repair was performed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Back up camera lines not working shortly after purchase. Fault code shows faulty or corroded wiring.

ENGINE

I was driving down the freeway and the motor suddenly stopped working, had to wait for hours in the 100 degree heat for a tow truck. I was informed by Toyota that a fuel injector failed and that it was leaking fuel into the cylinder.

SUSPENSION

Car drove fine day before incident, went to drive to water a neighbors plants and noticed a puddle of oil in my garage. Did the shock test by making the rear of the vehicle shake on each side. Rear drivers side shock failed as the vehicle kept bouncing and had no tension when pushing down. Seal between oil reservoir and shock blew and all oil had leaked out. Shock no longer functions, dealer is holding vehicle until a replacement arrives. Dealer confirmed the shocked failed and has ordered the part. It is on a national back order. Can provide a repair invoice once part arrives at dealer, repair is made, and I receive the receipt. I have been waiting for about a month now. Seems like this issue is happening to a lot of owners. In the pictures I am uploading you can see that the shock appears greasy that is from the oil.

SEAT BELTS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On 7/6/2024 after already having driven my truck to the store I noticed that the rear cab power sliding window exploded outward. Most of the glass was on the tonneau cover but some was inside. While cleaning it I noticed some has fallen into the seat belt assembly for the rear passenger seat. The temperature was 81f and there was absolutely no possible way that this was vandalism or a projectile hitting the glass. Toyota won't cover it or take responsibility. Fine, my concern is the glass that fell into the seatbelt assembly and how that might affect the safety of the belt.
